3-27-2017 Fish Creek Knob

Haven't skied for ten days.  Warm temps, avy conditions, rollerballs, buried ice crusts with sketchy layers waiting to strike.  Nope, not into it.

3-16-17 Gastineau Peak and Troy

Morning lap up Gastineau Peak with a mixed bag of rime, wind affected pow, and trail skiing.  Then a lap up to the Dan Moller cabin with a mini lap of skiing up above it.  3.5-4ft of new now skiing well, for now, with seemingly good stability.

3-13-17 Dan Moller area

About two feet of new snow without wind.  Some natural slides on steep rollovers, but no collapsing in the snowpack like last week.  Maybe this storm cycle will remain mostly stable?

Great tree skiing, one of my favorite spots on a storm day.

3-11-17 Thunder Mountain

Went up Thunder Mountain today.  Snowpack at the top of the treeline and above has formed hard wind slabs with some variability.  No more thumping and collapsing, and from a very tentative point of view, things seem to have stabilized from last weeks horror show.  Big snow on the horizon?

3-3-17 Blackerby Ridge

With no viable options for good safe skiing and continued high winds, we opted the safe route up Blackerby Ridge until the safety ran out, then we turned around.  Conditions are at least as sketchy as they were yesterday, if not more sketchy.  Continued remote release/propogation to distant slopes, stuff sliding on low angle slopes that you wouldn't normally expect.  This cycle is breaking all the rules.  Hopefully it will puke rain and get warm, maybe that will either cause a huge avy cycle, or heal it up.  Who knows.

Taku Winds blowing over Mt Roberts

Heading up Blackerby

Ridiculous winds on Blackerby.  We stopped short of Cairn Peak due to horrendous avy conditions.  We were just hiking with skis today, that was the only objective.

Oh, it was cold, too.

Got down early and headed to the ice caves.

3-2-17 Mt Troy

5" of rain, then a freeze, then 1" of snow an clear weather to facet that 1", then 18" of new with a bunch of wind.  Avy conditions  like I've never seen before.  Unreal how sensitive everything was.  We played it safe and found some nice powder in the trees.

3-1-17 Ben Stewart Area

Quickie afternoon tour after Tom's plane landed.  Skied some random little couloir near Ben Stewart, in a whiteout, because it was the only way to get any landmark visibility.
